This lesson is for intermediate users of the Antha OS system who wish know more about how devices are used in the Antha OS environment and how to change them, if desired.
About this tutorial
This lesson is an overview of how devices are used in the Antha OS environment. Devices are the general name for all automatable laboratory equipment, such as liquid handlers, incubators, and other robotic handlers.
Things you'll need
Before you get started you will need an Antha license so that you have access to Antha OS.
What you'll learn
In this lesson you will learn:
- How to use the Device Hub to preview your devices.
- How to change devices for your workflow either the protocol card, workflow editor, or dashboard.
The Device Hub
The Device Hub lets you see all of your registered devices in one place so you can quickly see the important details of each, including name, brand, and connectivity status.
When you create a new job, Antha OS will choose a compatible device for you. However, sometimes you may want to manually change the device being used. Depending on which tool in the Antha environment you're using, there are three different ways to do this.
Changing Devices in the Protocol Cards
Changing devices in the Protocol Cards is as easy as using the cards themselves. To change devices in the card view, simply select "job config" underneath the gear icon.
When this icon is clicked, the "Device Select Comp" panel will slide into view and you will be able to select from your previously connected devices.
Click on the "Pick Devices" text to see all of your devices and select the one you wish by checking the checkbox next to its name. The devices are separated by type, so if you don't see the one you're looking for, it may be listed under a different header. Because Antha supports the use of multiple devices in a workflow, you must also deselect any devices which you do not want to use in your workflow.
Finally, upload your design files as simulate the job as normal.
When you go to the dashboard view, your newly selected device will be visible.
Changing Devices in the Workflow Editor
You can change the preferred device for a workflow made in the Workflow Editor at any time during the workflow generation process. To change the device, click on the Configuration tab in the right hand panel.
Scroll down until you find the Devices header and click "Pick devices" to reveal the list of registered devices. Scroll down until you find the device you wish to use and select it by clicking the checkbox. Because Antha supports the use of multiple devices in a workflow, you must also deselect any devices which you do not want to use in your workflow.
One you have selected your new device and finished crafting your workflow, click the Simulate button to check that this device is compatible with your workflow.
If the simulation is successful, click on the "open dashboard in a new tab" button to see an overview of your workflow with the new device.
Changing Devices in the Dashboard
If you are already in the dashboard and wish to change the device you're using, selecting a new device is fast and simple.
In the dashboard, click the blue "CHANGE" button in the "Used Devices" card in the lower right hand part of the dashboard.
Note: You can only change the device during simulation mode. Once you have scheduled the job, you cannot change the device.
An overlay will appear with all of your devices grouped by device type. Locate the type of device you would like to change to, and then select your device from within that list. Because Antha supports the use of multiple devices in a workflow, you must also deselect any devices which you do not want to use in your workflow. Once you are happy with your new selection, press the "SELECT" button. This step could take a few moments as the system re-simulates the workflow, especially if your workflow is complex.
One the system is done re-scheduling, you will see your new device on the dashboard.
